# How does NFC chip-based identity checking work?

NFC allows communication with the chip of a supported identity document. Reading data from the chip and completing all verification checks on the document are not the same operation.

## Access and verification

Separate the chip-access role of mechanisms such as BAC and PACE from data-integrity and authenticity checks. Do not use technical terms interchangeably.

## Document and device scope

Document support, the device's NFC capability and the application platform affect the flow. Define the cases in which a user can retry after a failed read or move to an alternative process.

## Assess the result within the whole flow

Chip data is considered together with the person check and other identity steps. If a success rate is published, the document, device, version and test conditions must be stated.
